Why do newspapers put movie titles in italics if AP style says to quote them?

i'm a freelance film critic, studying the AP style guide, cause im sending some materials out to some publications and ap style says the quote movies throughout a review, but USA today and every other reputable publication, which, i believe most claim to subscribe to AP style, do them in italics. i really prefer italics... whats the deal? and what should i do when sending these out in my portfolio?
